  • Why is loose leaf tea better than traditional tea-bags? How is Happy Leaf different?
See the image below showing the difference between a well known "quality" brand of tea from a supermarket versus our fabulous loose leaf tea. Loose-leaf tea is a tea that is not brewed in a teabag. When you steep loose-leaf tea, it has room for tea leaves to absorb water and expand as they infuse, which in turn allows the water to flow through the leaves and extract a wide range of vitamins, minerals, flavours, and aromas from the leaves. Traditional tea-bags do not have pure loose leaf tea - they use dust and fannings which is broken down so its flavour, aroma, and health properties are degraded. Tea that is broken can taste bitter due to a higher amount of tannins when steeped. Whole leaf tea expands and unfurls as it steeps. This expansion produces more flavour and provides a taste of freshness to the drink. Here at Happy Leaf, we only sell the finest whole leaf, pure loose leaf tea - we sell infusers giving your tea room to move to bring out the flavour and more environmentally friendly as less waste. We also sell fully bio-degradable teabags for you to fill with your pure tea if you prefer.
  • How long should I infuse tea for?
Each packet of our tea gives advice on how much tea to use and how long to brew it for and at what temperature. Some teas may have a strong astringent taste if infused for too long so it is best to infuse it for the correct time/temperature and serve it hot and fresh.
  • How is Tea healthy?
All teas and tisanes provide some level of antioxidants, vitamins, nutrients, and have anti-bacterial properties. Please see our tab "Health Benefits of Tea" for detailed information. Please also look at all of our ranges - we have many teas, herbal and caffeine free tisanes available. Each product has a full description of how this can help you. Our range offer so many health benefits and we hope you feel the difference!
  • Should I use an infuser or a teapot?
Infusers exist to replace tea bags but maintain the quality and taste of loose leaf tea. Even better, they’re sustainable and easy to use. Zero Waste. We have several infusers to choose from. It can also be brewed with a teapot designed to brew loose leaf tea. These teapots have built-in infusers or tea strainers, which can be removed to avoid over steeping. Teapots come in different sizes, so you'll need to follow the guidance on how much tea per person as per the packet. Here at Happy Leaf we stock various size teapots from a mini teapot for 2 cups/mugs to larger sizes. This will be detailed on the description on each product in our shop. We also sell tea infuser bottles so that you can drink your loose leaf tea on the go! Please also note that we have specialist iced-tea pitchers for real loose leaf iced-tea.

  • How do you prepare iced tea?
Always use filtered water if possible (not distilled) Put the ready filled teabag into your chosen pitcher (1 teabag for 1 litre) or if using loose leaf not already put into a teabag then 1 teaspoon per person. We have a tea infuser iced tea pitcher available. Fill with cold water & let the tea infuse the water for 6 to 12 hours in the refrigerator. For quicker preparation, steep in hot water for 5-10 minutes and add ice. Add your own garnish of fruit or mint to add the finishing touch. If you prefer it a little sweeter use our honey spoons for iced tea. Any teas made in this way can be stored up to 24 hours in an airtight container in the fridge.
  • Why do the prices vary so much?
Tea is purchased in weight and depending upon the rarity of the tea, the age, the supply availability, the process in harvesting to name just a few reasons. Tea is very much like wine in its flavour, price and vintage differences.
  • How long does loose tea keep for?
Properly stored, loose tea will generally stay at best quality for about 18 to 24 months. To maximize the shelf life of loose tea, and to better retain flavour and potency, store in airtight containers.
  • How many cups of tea do you get in a pack?
This is a tricky question as tea is sold in weight and the size of the tea and blends vary so much. As a very approximate guideline please see below - 17g - approximately 6 cups 50g - approximately 22 cups 100g - approximately 44 cups 500g - approximately 220 cups Please note, however, that this will differ in blends and also dependent upon the size of spoon you use.
